Shane Watson has been named as the 2009-10 Allan Border Medallist - the award given to Australia's overall player of the year.

Watson also picked up the one-day player of the year award, while the Test award went to Simon Katich.

Watson's win is made all the more remarkable by the fact that he played just 9 of the 15 Tests during the voting period; missing the tour to Safferland and the first two Tests of the Ashes series.

His stats tell the story - along with the fact he's managed to stay injury free for more than an hour: he averaged 57 at the top of the order in Tests, with 13 wickets at 30; while in one-dayers he averaged 48 with the bat and 21.2 with the ball.

Those figures suggest he is, in fact, actually quite a decent all-rounder.

We'd like to say 'we told you so', but given we've spent years mocking Watson as an over-rated, injury-prone wanker, it's fair to say he's more than proved us wrong.

He even managed to collect his trophy without pulling his hamstring, further emphasising just how much progress the Queenslander-turned-Tasmanian-turned-Queenslander-turned-New-South-Welshman has made.

i think they should had dropped him earlier bcause they dropped hughes because of the short stuff, and watson struggles with LBWs and they target him there so they should have really dropped him
also he averages good but doesn't make enough 100s
apart from that hes good

He's an awesome batsmen, he does'nt get enough hundreds coz he doz strugle with lbws but wen u think bout it Hughes doesnt get much hundreds and hughes struggles to get a decent score over 30 while watson gets 35+ in almost all of his games!

he is still an over rated injury prone wanker but he won the medal so you cant knock him for that.

He doesn't struggle with LBW's at all anymore. He got over that ages ago.
