Should the third umpire just be used for run-outs?

We've had some horrible decisions this summer, and I asked myself the question, should they just be used for run-outs? In that T20 match between Pakistan and Australia a few days ago, the Cameron White dismissal was horrible. If you zoomed in closely, you would actually see that the ball actually hit Cameron White's glove, before Fawad Alam caught the ball and pegged it at the stumps. The bowler has been robbed of a wicket there. There are other things that can make this point more valid, they are on the tip of my tounge and I just can't remember. Apart from just the run-outs, what about those LBW decisions? That one against Shane Watson in the ODI yesterday on the first ball of the day, that was plumb LBW. And another one I can't remember who it was against, it was plumb, hitting middle and off.

The third umpire has been superb with the run-out decisions this year and has been a great help with the umpires calls. It's only good for the run-outs from my point of view, but what do you think about it?

well we have had this post before but I think it should only be run-outs. I don't think that people should go up to the umpire and say ok go to the 3rd umpire. I think that when a decision has been made then it has been made. It stays like that. And also batsmen like to waste their reviews with the IBW's. They really can't tell so I think it should be only used for run-outs

Some third umpires don't even get the run-outs right... take today for instance, it was inconclusive whether McCullum or the ball hit the stumps first, and he's still given out. Aren't these situations supposed to favour the batting team?

I'd say if it's at all close go to the third umpire. If it's obvious then the umpire should have the sense to do it right

No. In fact, I remember someone (was it Kirby?) who did a blog not so long ago where he suggested taking the review system out of players' hands and giving the third umpire the power to overrule the on-field umpires. I'd be for that.

No need for that either, just show the replay on the big screen and let the on field umpire make the call. 8-)

No - too much timewasting let the law of averages take its course - T20 is too fast paced for that sort of interuptions - give the on-field umpire some credit

+ 1. To be honest, this summer there has been quite good umpiring for mine, the odd bad one, but thats what you get sometimes.

No. Technology for run-outs. I'm somewhat of a traditionalist, as my dislike for the sexed-up form shows. The umpire's decision is final, and he should have the balls to trust his better judgment.

No the third umpire should only be used for run out's or a lot of time will be wasted to go to the third umpire for every decision
