Welcome to Pad First, the medium through which I am able to rant about my love of cricket (and the problems with the modern game), the underrated brilliance of Daniel Vettori, and my unhealthy detestation of Twenty20 cricket. Pad First was recently voted Stick Sports' best blog of 2009, and has, to date, had two entries (here and here) published on Cricinfo. If you agree or disagree with my opinions, or just want to have your five cents worth, any comments on the blogs are always appreciated! Hope you enjoy!

One Letter Short of the Truth

kirby July 3, 2010

This summarises exactly what is wrong with world cricket. We all should know by now that the nomination of John Howard for Vice President and ultimately President of the International Cricket Councial put forth by the joint region of Australia and New Zealand has been vetoed by the true powerbrokers of world cricket. As yet no true rationalisation has been given for Howard's non-appointment.

Before I take a look at...

How Farcical Is This!?

kirby May 15, 2010
Just a very quick word against the farce that is the World Twenty20 tournament.

Not only is it's exceedingly minimal amount of meaning being astoundingly diminished by this tournament being the 3rd in 3 or 4 years (compared to a proper World Cup every four years), but the peculiar case of the English side has just absolutely destroyed the tournament's credibility.

kirby April 1, 2010
Now for the next installment of the My Favourite Player series: Shane Warne, the undisputed King of Spin.

There are very few men who have had such an impact on the game as one Shane Warne. But putting records and sheer weight of numbers aside, perhaps what makes his career so outstanding is the context in which he did it. He not only revived the art of spin bowling worldwide,...

Merv, 2.0

kirby March 22, 2010
Ever since debuting in January last year against the touring South Africans, Doug Bollinger has become something of a cult hero among fans. So much so, in fact, that he's beginning to remind me of another solid, popular paceman of the 1980's and 90's ilk: the great Mervyn Gregory Hughes.

Ah, Merv. Who can forget the great moustachioed paceman who became Bill Lawry's second favourite Victorian of all-time? Unfortunately I was too young to watch Merv play Test cricket (or at least remember...

5 Reasons Why Steve Smith Will Debut Against New Zealand

kirby March 16, 2010
When the Australian Test squad for the tour of New Zealand was announced last week, one reasonably surprising inclusion was 20-year-old New South Wales leggie Steve Smith. On first glance, it may seem his inclusion is only ceremonial, but I believe that he will play in the first Test against New Zealand starting on Friday, and these are the five reasons why.

1. The Kid's In Form
Smith was recently named the Steve Waugh medallist for the 2009/10 season (NSW player of the year),...
