Serena wins fifth Aussie Open
by The Bunyip January 30, 2010

Serena Williams has won the Australian Open a fifth time, with a three set victory over Justine Henin at Melbourne Park.

The Australian Open has been fairly predictable over the past decade, with Williams dominating the women's and Federer the men's - and this year could be no different, with Federer favourite to lift the trophy tomorrow.

The trophy engravers in the Melbourne area must be in danger of getting RSI, as Williams' 6-4 3-6 6-2 victory over Justine Henin sealed her fifth Aussie Open since first winning the title in 2003.

It's Williams' 12th Grand Slam title, meaning she is now equal sixth with Billie-Jean Kean on the all time list.

Serena's victory halted Justine Henin's comeback charge, as the Belgian was attempting to emulate the success of Kim Clijsters - who, at Flushing Meadows, won her first slam since coming out of retirement.

But instead it was the predictable winner. Scots, and Brits desperate for any tennis success, will be hoping the trophy engravers will need to learn a new name for tomorrow.

Serena deserved it but the star of the competition was definently Justine Henin. She came back and in her first grand slam she came runner-up to the best player in the world

Serena didnt make the blog's top 5 female players for now but a few more wins in singles and doubles and it gets interesting.
Justine Henin showed mental strength that a few of the guys could learn from - had to have been short match fitness but kept finding a way to the line. In the final Serena had the same mental strength - overcoming how many injuries? - to nail that serve when she needed it. Two great champions. Looking forward to a few more finals like that.
