Mixed feelings over McGwire
by The Bunyip February 4, 2010

Many Cardinals fans are still unsure of how to feel about new hitting coach Mark McGwire, after he recently confessed to having used performance enhancing drugs throughout his career.

An article in The New York Times suggests St. Louis is torn on whether to forgive and accept McGwire, who managed 583 home runs in his a career - including a then-record-breaking haul of 80 during 1998.

But, as Cardinals fan Bob Beumer told The Times: "It’s like when you find out your favorite grandfather didn’t turn in his income taxes. You didn't like him any less, but you squint at him and look at him a little funny because you wish he wouldn't have done that," he said.

At the winter warm-ups McGwire enjoyed a standing ovation, but local media outlets have suggested this is akin to Barack Obama getting a standing ovation at a Democratic Convention (or John Terry in front of Chelsea fans) and that there's plenty of animosity elsewhere.

Jack Clark, a former Cardinal, is one to have publicly criticised the incoming hitting coach.

Clark said seeing McGwire in uniform made him want to throw up and that he should be barred from baseball forever.

I hate to say this, but then everybody deserves a second chance. If ever Mark McGwire will handle the Cardinal, he might also be an asset to the team. Of course he used steroids but then we cannot deny the fact that he is also a good player, his skills will contribute a lot. But then, hopefully he wont make his team used it to trick people. Well, this could be a good timing of the Cardinal can be called best baseball team because McGwire coach them. Let’s just see what could be the possible happenings. Good luck!
