Afridi's misguided hunger

Glinn Mgraw January 31, 2010

Look, I know everyone can get a bit peckish from time to time, but trying to eat a cricket ball as though it was a fruit of some kind is probably going just a wee bit far, no?

It's a shame too, as Afridi had been offering some good captaincy. Who knows, maybe he was the solution of Pakistan's ever-present captaincy difficulties. But how's he going to captain the team from the stands? Devouring leather won't get his team any victories.

Having said that - it is only a ban for two Twenty20 matches. Really only robbing the spectators from a little more big hitting, to be honest.

But what if that were to happen in a test match? Is that the sort of thing we really want to see? I think not. His hunger should be directed where it was for most of the night - winning the game within the rules.

On the plus side for him though - he can't be accused of being a toothless captain.

So, what do you think? Should Shahid Afridi captain Pakistan?

TBF, I don't think that it'd be very good ball-tampering.

Umm..............................................D ark Shadow he's not stupid, you are. He's a better cricketer than you, you should respect that. All he was doing was making the ball have grip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is this about him being a better cricketer than me? (And I would argue that my nine year old sister has a better defensive technique than he does). That doesn't excuse him from being a complete retard. And biting on the ball (even if he was trying to make the ball "grip" better) is, ahem, illegal. He admitted to such. To do so in full view on a cricket field with cameras and officials everywhere = Stupid.

loook afridi is 1 of the best batsman in the world and everyone goes against pakistan like in 2007 inzamamul haq and pakistan have lost many players through injury and everyone changes the ball in some way cos once englands anderson was caught ball tampering on the video footage by nasser hussain but nothing happened afridi is a good player give him a break

He shouldnt have done it (especially with all the TV cameras on him!) but I still would like to see him play in the 20/20 matches. Give hime a fine, a slap on the wrist and something to eat and get on with the game! Lets face it he has been one of Pakistans best players over the summer and would help to make the 20/20 a closer contest and surely the cricket board would want to see more bums on seats, tv viewers and a cricketer that can excite the fans!

    Bite

Honestly, it wasn't the best decision, he may of been frustrated, but still no right to go and bite the ball so you can get a bit of an advantage. The team needs him though, the team hasn't been going well, as many may of you should have noticed already (and if you haven't, please stop reading) but Afridi might be the good choice to captain the team and lead the team into a few victories in the future of Pakistani Cricket.

I just love reading the comments and seeing how many Paki supporters are trying to justify Afridi's actions - I'd be willing to bet they'd be screaming for blood had it been an Indian player doing it.

The fact that Afridi initially claimed he was 'smelling the ball' shows he knew it was completely against the rules (not a hard point to get) and wanted to get away with it - is such a blatant liar and a cheat the sort of person who should be a figurehead for his country? I'd say not. It's not how good a player he is that's the question here, it's his morals and ethics - cheating and those who cheat should have examples made of them, especially if they're the captain of the national team. The ICC should treat him much like Marion Jones, Riccardo Ricco, Ivan Basso, Ben Johnson etc etc - stick Afridi up there on display and give him a big ban (5 matches or more) and/or a decent fine.

@xs180 - While I agree Pakistan need him and that a more competitive game will bring more spectators, I disagree on the wristslapping - if the ICC give weak punishments to tamperers it's not going to discourage players from doing it. Afridi should have been given a longer ban (and maybe Stuart Broad for the incident in SA) - if the ICC takes a hard line on this, hopefully it'll reduce incidences of tampering further down the track.
