Symonds the Twenty20 pioneer

apwebster June 13, 2009

Andrew Symonds may have had his Cricket Australia contract handed to Shaun Tait, but he looks set to earn more than its value as a Twenty20 freelancer.

Symonds, of course, is already a key part of the Deccan Chargers squad in the IPL, and the Highveld Lions are also reportedly interested in signing him up for the South African competition. If he was to take part in four domestic competitions (the Big Bash in Australia, the South African competition, the IPL and English cricket's revamped P20 league), his potential earnings could far outstrip any loss of income from Cricket Australia, something which could turn the heads of one or two international players coming towards the end of their careers.

It is possible that a new breed of freelance big hitters could develop in Symonds' image, circling the globe and pocketing millions of dollars. If so, then questions are bound to be asked about how national cricket boards can make centrally-contracted Test cricket more attractive to players who are capable of earning more as hired guns.

i never saw the fuss about symonds....i never saw why he deserved any more attention than any other player even when he was probably playing at his best. but over the last few years, i fail to see the reasons why he was ever even considered to be in the team given his poor form and attitude. but its always been like there's this drug that everyone's been on (especially in Aus) that made them think that Symonds was the best cricketer around. for people who weren't complete idiots, however, they would know that he only ever managed 2 test centuries, averaged less than 40 in one day matches with again only a handful of centuries, and only played 14 20/20s for Australia. when you look at the records, it makes you realize what an overated cricketer he was and i think cricket Austalia will be better off from his demise.

i'm just saying what a number of others are saying. why make it personal? why do you get all offended when you encounter a dissenting opinion? geez, i'd hate to know you, probably be scary. look, i feel bad for symonds, he had limitless potential, but ultimately he had a lot of opportunities and its time to give other cricketers a chance
