Match-fixing in the IPL?

apwebster May 16, 2009

Javed Miandad has never been shy of controversy (or of telling people what he thinks), and he is stirring it up once again by saying that "there is a definite smell of match-fixing coming from the IPL where strange things are happening".

Leaving aside the question of what match-fixing smells of, Miandad's justification for this assertion seems to be based on the fact that occasional bowlers are taking lots of wickets, and that teams are losing matches from seemingly unassailable positions. This alone isn't proof of foul play, as the bizarre and extraordinary is commonplace in Twenty20.

It does seem, however, that the preponderance of matches in the IPL and other competitions such as the ICL (which has itself been plagued by rumours of match-fixing) makes matches easier to fix. If the current growth of the shortest format continues, a situation could be reached which is comparable to the surfeit of meaningless ODIs that contributed to the Hanse Cronje affair.

I'm not suggesting that any matches in the IPL have been fixed, but cricket needs to be careful that it is not making a rod for its own back with 59-match competitions that are bound to create 'dead' matches that players (who are, after all, mainly taking part in the IPL or ICL for financial reasons) could be tempted to fix.

There is match fixing in a lot of top level sport. Fifa world cup 2006 I believe, and more, much more. Read it in the Telegraph so it must be true

I think there is no match fixing in the IPL. Teams and players are just playing good.

I can see it happening. From memory, didn't Deccan do really poorly in last years IPL, and now they're just about top. And Rajasthan won it last year and are doing pretty poorly. It's not like our friends the Indian business magnates have a shortage of money to fix a couple of matches and keep players' mouths shut is it? At the end of the day people have to remember that the IPL is a moneymaking enterprise, and if your team's not winning, you're not making money. The cricket is only a side dish.

Well Kirby, no offence, but just because Deccan did bad last year, it doesn't necessarily mean that they HAVE TO do bad this year. The KKR for example, got upto to the semi's or the finals, but this year have ended up on the bottom of the table... I don't think it's match fixing, it's just the pressure that the teams feel and the bowlers take advantage of that and win games.... like bhaji25 said, it's just some teams do well and some don't... the ones who handle pressure the best are usually the winners. Especially in A 20-over game, there is definitely a lot of pressure felt by the batsmen and the bowlers, there cannot really be match fixing

And I have been observing, a lot of these blogs have been using India as an example and for some reason are not friendly towards indian fans... we are all like you guys, we just have different opinions and might sometimes make mstakes. It happens, it's a game, and anything is possible, so please don't use BCCI and India as your target, their intentions are pure and do not wish to "show-off" or make money.

The BCCI are far from pure.

Many Indian fans, on the other hand, are fantastic.

well, Ive never seen any intentional damage caused by the BCCI towards international cricket, and if the BCCI really wanted to make money, i am pretty sure they could do that through other means, from what i see, I have never seen the BCCI as part of a match-fixing incident. I honestly think it is a great decision and the south africans were overjoyed to host the IPL. Can you believe that to watch the final, the stadium capacity was 31,000 people and 38,000 people showed up? That is a huge number, and were excess people as well. And the closing ceremoney and everything, that was just fantastic, and I personally love the IPL as it gives a lot of youngsters a chance to play and show their potential in international cricket. I hope you guys like it too, as cricketers from all over the world have joined and made a difference
