India's masterplan for 2009

apwebster January 1, 2009

India, who are already, in my view, somewhere near the best ODI team in the world on current form, want to officially be the best ODI team in the world by the end of this year.

In order to acheive this, India will need to overcome New Zealand and the West Indies, their next two opponents, with some ease, and bring through the next generation of young players. Whilst there's more competition for the ODI top spot than for the corresponding status in the Test world, India have the players (Sehwag in particular is simply amazing), and the side is sufficiently balanced, for it to be an attainable goal for India over the next 12 months.

Much, however, will depend on whether Australia's recent Test troubles cross over to their ODI form. If the Aussies keep winning, all the Sehwag magic in the world (and there's quite a lot of it) won't shift them from the top spot.

I think India could be the be the best team in the world with their current form. Australia will loose the top spot unless they have a rethink of their team.: confused1:

india will get to the top next year in tests.in odi matches they will have to get higher to be number 1.they can do it. austalian players are old and only a few are young.they have to rethink and if south africa win in sydney they will be 1st in test ranking.at the moment india and south africa have the same rating but it will change.

I'm more confident of Australia staying as number 1 ODI team than I am of Australia staying number 1 Test team.

Australia are more balanced in the shorter forms of the game as they use more all rounders like Symo and Hopes so they have the advantage of a longer batting order

India can be No. 1... Australian team has basically been reformatted and is having a hard time building.... this can be proven by the shock exit from the T20 world cup. Don't get me wrong, but Australia was at it's best when they had the best in world, i.e., Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist, Symonds, Warne, Lee and Ponting. When these people were put in combination, they were unbeatable. But with all of them retired or about to retire, it would be interesting to watch how Australia will keep the No. 1 spot. India too, is in the same position, except they have proven themselves in the 1st ODI against the West Indies (which India won by 20 runs), that they can survive even without key players such as Sehwag, Tendulkar, Dravid and Zaheer Khan. No doubt Australia is a great team, but they will take quite a while to regain the No. 1 spot. But right now, my money is on India and South Africa. Both of them will be equal in terms of strength and skill.
